Wow! What an amazing start the
season last Dinner. It was great to see everyone after the summer break. And
the topic was very enterntaining. Let's keep it rolling with another trending
topic right now.
Presentation Description:
This presentation will teach the
audience about the available technology for structural monitoring and how it
can be utilized for quality assurance, risk mitigation, improved quality of
life for occupants and support in architecture, engineering and construction,
with a focus on Mass Timber applications. 1 LU
After attending our one hour session, attendees will be able to:
1. Describe how different types of structure monitoring
technologies are implemented in various buildings - from moisture and leak
detection to dynamic thermo performance monitoring (i.e. measured R-value).
2. Identify the immediate and long-term benefits of adopting
monitoring systems for building envelopes during the construction commissioning
process.
3. Identify the different variables in which a contractor can
control for successful building enclosure commissioning.
4. Discuss potential future collaboration of innovative
monitoring technologies for construction - specific to the building enclosure,
energy consumption and air tightness, thus improving build quality and
occupants health and safety.
Speakers Bios:
Caitlin Hay, AA MACS (she/her)
Technical Engagement
Manager at SMT
Caitlin Hay is a dedicated Technical Engagement Manager at SMT -
Structure Monitoring Technology, a leading firm specializing in advanced
solutions for leak detection and structural health monitoring for commercial,
critical and research buildings. At SMT, Caitlin has played a pivotal role in
shaping and executing strategic communication and education initiatives that
underscore the company's commitment to innovation and to provide quality
assurance in construction. As a speaker, Caitlin offers valuable insights into
building roof leak detection through data-driven storytelling.
Caitlin has leveraged her expertise to enhance sensor and leak
detection technology awareness on a global scale. Her work involves creating
impactful communication strategies that support the industry goal of advancing
infrastructure quality assurance, resilience, and sustainability.
Dorothy Johns, OAA, CPHC
(she/her)
PhD Candidate
Dorothy Johns is a licensed architect in Ontario, Canada. She is
currently pursuing a PhD in Building Science at Toronto Metropolitan University
focusing on the hygrothermal performance and durability of mass timber. Her
doctoral research will contribute to improving the AEC industrys ability to
predict the drying potential of mass timber in building enclosure assemblies
and will analyze the hygrothermal behavior, mold risk, and durability of mass
timber during the construction and operation of mass timber buildings. Her
professional architectural portfolio ranges from single and multi-unit
residential to commercial, recreational, and institutional buildings
prioritizing sustainable design and detailing strategies to reduce embodied and
operational carbon. Dorothy currently teaches in both architecture and building
science in the Department of Architectural Science at Toronto Metropolitan
University. Her courses and studios focus on sustainable design practices and
material research at the intersection of architectural design and building
science.
