This session will introduce NAAWS 5.0 as more than an update—it represents a significant step forward in how quality, consistency, and performance are defined across the architectural woodwork industry. Attendees will gain insight into why the new edition was developed, what has changed, and how it responds to the increasing complexity of modern projects.

This presentation will explore how NAAWS 5.0 improves clarity and usability, aligns expectations across design, manufacturing, and installation, and supports better communication among project stakeholders. It will also highlight the transition to a digital microsite platform, positioning the standard as a living resource that can evolve with industry needs.

From a practical perspective, the session will focus on what this means for all who regularly use the manual — particularly in terms of strengthening internal quality assurance processes, reducing rework and ambiguity, and supporting more confident project delivery.
Finally, the session will connect the role of standards to broader industry outcomes, including risk reduction, improved consistency, and increased trust in AWMAC members, positioning NAAWS 5.0 not just as a compliance tool, but as a competitive advantage.

Presenter: Laurie Suikki, Association Manager with AWMAC Ontario Chapter

Bio: Laurie has been working in the construction industry for over 30 years and brings 15 years of experience specifically within the millwork sector. Presenter: Nick Anastas, Past President with AWMAC Ontario Chapter
Bio: Nick has spent the last 35 years working in the woodworking industry, with a focus on commercial projects.

Starting from the solids breakout department at the JF Gillanders, Nick through continuous hard work became the shop Lead Hand, then Project Manager, and ultimately Senior Estimator.
Since those days at JF Gillanders, he worked in a number of small and large shops, in management positions including Chief Estimator, Project Manager, Plant Manager, and Operations Director. Nick has worked both in privately and publicly held companies - in shops of varying fabrication capacity, from 5,000 to  160,000 sq.ft.

Some high profile projects that Nick has been directly involved include the Toronto City Hall, AGO, Aga Khan Museum; TIFF, and countless more.

Nick also volunteers as the Past President of AWMAC Ontario Chapter and a contributing member to the NAAWS publication and Joint Standards committees.
Nick is very fond of kittens, coffee, hand planes and bourbon. But not necessarily in that order.
